Every maths competition produces two kinds of content. Before the exam, there are preparation guides — question banks, mock papers, ten tips for the big day. After the results, there are congratulations — winner lists, medal photos, proud school notice boards.

Nobody writes for the week in between the two audiences. Nobody writes for the homes of the roughly ninety percent who didn't advance, where a child is quietly deciding what this result means about them, and a parent is quietly deciding what to say about it.

This is that article. It is not a consolation piece. It is a practical one — because a competition result, read properly, is one of the most useful things your child will bring home all year.

The first 48 hours: what to say, and what never to say

The result will land harder on your child than they let on, and how the first two days go matters more than anything you do afterwards.

The distinction to hold on to is this: "you didn't qualify" is information. "You're not an Olympiad kid" is a life sentence — and a false one. The first describes one paper on one morning. The second describes a person, and children believe descriptions of themselves with alarming permanence.

So in the first 48 hours, say less than you want to. Acknowledge the disappointment without rushing to fix it — "that's rough, you worked hard for it" beats "it doesn't matter" (it clearly mattered) and beats "next year we'll prepare harder" (which turns grief into homework within the hour). Do not compare with classmates who advanced. Do not review the paper yet. And watch for the sentence your child may try out on themselves — "I'm just bad at maths" — because that one, left unanswered, outlasts any certificate.

Carol Dweck's research on mindset gives the honest version of the reframe, and it is not "believe and achieve." It is that children who see a result as a measure of their preparation so far, rather than a measure of their fixed capacity, recover faster and improve more. That is what this result is: a snapshot of preparation to date. Not a ceiling.

The result is data — better data than school gives you

Once the sting has faded — a week, maybe two — the paper itself becomes valuable, because a competition paper is the most honest diagnostic your child has taken all year.

Think about what school tests measure: this term's syllabus, taught this term, in question formats rehearsed this term. A child can score well on those with a fortnight of cramming and some pattern-matching. A competition paper is different by design. It is harder, less predictable, and untethered from whatever the class covered in October. It reaches back across grades, dresses familiar ideas in unfamiliar clothes, and applies time pressure.

Which means it probes exactly the things school tests politely avoid: whether the foundations underneath this year's work are actually solid. When a child underperforms on a paper like that, the reason is very often not this year's material at all — it is a skill from a grade or two earlier that never became automatic. The competition didn't create that gap. It just found it, which is more than most report cards manage.

A competition result isn't a verdict on your child. It's the most detailed maths diagnostic you'll get all year — if you read it instead of grieving it.

The post-mortem, done kindly

Get the paper back, or the score breakdown if the paper isn't released — most organisers publish at least a section-wise or answer-key breakdown, though what you can get varies by competition.

Then, with your child if they're willing and without them if they're not, sort every lost mark into one of three buckets:

Bucket 1 — never learned it. The topic simply hadn't been taught, or was taught once and never revisited. A Grade 5 child (Class 5 in India, Year 6 in England) meeting a factors-and-multiples question that leans on ideas their class skimmed in one week last year belongs here. This is the most common bucket, and the most fixable.

Bucket 2 — knew it, but too slow. They could have solved it with unlimited time; the clock decided otherwise. This is a fluency problem, not a knowledge problem — the facts and procedures aren't automatic yet, so every step costs thinking time. It responds to short daily retrieval practice, and it is worth knowing that slowness and weakness are not the same thing.

Bucket 3 — knew it, but misread under pressure. Answered the question they expected rather than the one asked; slipped a sign; missed the word "not." This is exam craft plus nerves, and it has its own fixes — none of which are "be more careful," a sentence that has never once worked.

The buckets matter because each one has a completely different remedy: gap-filling, fluency work, exam craft. Most families skip the sorting and jump straight to "more practice," which treats all three buckets with the medicine for none of them.

A parent we spoke to did exactly this after his daughter, then in Grade 5, missed her Olympiad's qualifying cut by four marks. His first instinct — he admits this freely — was to buy a harder question bank. Instead he sat down with her paper and sorted it. Three of her misses turned out to be a single topic, factors and multiples, which she had simply never been taught in any depth. Not carelessness, not nerves, not a lack of talent — one topic. They spent a term fixing that one thing, mostly using the previous grade's material. The following season she cleared the cut, and the question bank stayed unbought.

The base-rate talk you owe your child (and yourself)

Here is the arithmetic almost no competition brochure prints.

Math Kangaroo runs in dozens of countries and its worldwide participation is counted in the millions each year; the awards go to a thin slice at the top of each level. School-level Olympiads in India — SOF's exams, CREST Olympiads and their peers — draw hundreds of thousands of entrants, and typically advance only a small top fraction per class to the second level, under rules that shift slightly from year to year. The AMC 8 in the US and the Primary Maths Challenge in the UK follow the same shape: enormous entry, narrow distinction bands.

Run those numbers in any direction you like and the conclusion is the same. Not advancing is the normal outcome. Statistically, the second round is the exception — the overwhelming majority of children who sat the same paper as yours are in the same position this week. That doesn't make the disappointment smaller, but it does relocate it: your child didn't fail at something most children pass. They got the modal result of a deliberately selective exam.

Say that to them, in your own words. Children are natural statisticians about fairness; they find base rates genuinely comforting.

A six-month plan to next season

If your child wants another attempt — and it should be their want, not the household's — here is a calm route to the next registration window, whichever competition and region that falls in.

Months 1–2: diagnose and fill backwards. Use the bucket sort above, plus a broader check of the previous grade or two, and fix the named gaps in order. This feels like going the wrong way. It is the fastest road there is, and it is the step almost everyone skips in favour of harder questions on top of the same soft floor.

Months 3–5: short daily practice, mixed and at the right level. Ten to twenty focused minutes a day, pitched so your child succeeds on most questions but not all, beats any weekend marathon. This is where Bucket 2 quietly resolves itself: fluency is built by frequency, not intensity.

The final stretch: past papers and exam craft. Only now, with the foundations solid, do competition-style papers earn their keep — for format familiarity, time management, and the Bucket 3 habits: read the question twice, mark the ones to return to, check the units. Past papers in month one drill anxiety; past papers in month six drill craft.
