One disclosure before we start, because it is the reason you can trust what follows: we run Olympiad training. Competition preparation is part of what CREST Champs does and where we came from. What competitions test that school exams don't
Let's give Olympiads their full due first, because the genuine benefits are real and school exams mostly don't offer them.
A school test asks: can you do what was taught this term, in the format it was taught? A good competition paper asks three harder questions. Can you handle a problem you have never seen before — not a harder version of a familiar one, but a genuinely unfamiliar shape? Can you read with precision, when one word changes the entire problem? And can you sustain reasoning through a forty-five-minute paper that never once lets you coast on routine?
Unfamiliar problems, reading precision, reasoning stamina. Those are three of the most valuable capacities a young mathematician can build, and they transfer far beyond maths. This is as true of SOF and CREST Olympiads in India as of Math Kangaroo, which runs in roughly ninety countries, the AMC 8 in the US, and the Primary Maths Challenge in the UK. The formats differ; the underlying test — think, don't recall — is the same everywhere.
For the right child at the right time, that experience is worth every rupee, dollar or pound of the entry fee. The whole question is whether your child, this year, is that child.
The honest costs
Now the ledger's other column, which the brochures leave blank.
Money. A single entry fee looks trivial — typically a modest amount per exam, in the range of a takeaway meal in most regions. But the industry's model is multiplication: one child is invited to sit maths, science, English and cyber Olympiads; each has a fee; second rounds sometimes add more; then the question banks, the mock-test series, the crash courses. Multiply across two or three siblings and a school year, and families routinely spend a significant sum on competitions alone — often without ever deciding to.
Time. Preparation hours come from somewhere. For a child whose fundamentals are secure, competition prep is enrichment. For a child with gaps, every hour on Olympiad-style problems is an hour not spent on the prerequisite skills that actually determine their next three years — and the prep is far less effective anyway, because struggle at today's level usually traces to a skill from a grade or two below.
Confidence. This is the cost that doesn't appear on any receipt. A competition paper is calibrated to defeat most of the children who sit it; that is what makes qualification meaningful. Put a child who is already shaky on basics in front of a paper like that, and the paper does not teach them resilience. It teaches them, with official-looking certainty, that they are bad at maths. That lesson compounds — maths anxiety is built from exactly this kind of repeated public defeat — and it costs far more to undo than any entry fee.
The decision framework, by child
So: should your child enter? Here is the framework we actually use with families, by profile.
The puzzle-lover with solid basics. Yes — this is who these exams are for. The child who does maths riddles for fun and whose number facts are automatic will find a competition paper exhilarating rather than crushing. One refinement: pick one or two exams a year, not six. Depth of preparation for one paper builds more than shallow rehearsal for a season-long circuit, and the child stays hungry rather than saturated.
The solid but exam-anxious child. Maybe — with the stakes surgically removed. Enter casually, frame it as a puzzle morning, skip the rank talk entirely, and never let the result near the dinner table. Handled this way, a low-stakes competition can even help an anxious child, by proving a hard paper can be survived. Handled as An Important Exam, it will do the opposite.
The child currently filling gaps. Not this year. And we want to be precise about what that sentence is: it is a strategy, not a surrender. A child who spends this year securing their foundations and enters next year — or the year after — will walk into that paper genuinely equipped, and will very likely outscore the version of themselves that spent the same year grinding competition papers on soft ground. Fundamentals first is not the consolation route to a good Olympiad result. It is the faster route.
The best Olympiad prep for many children is not doing an Olympiad this year.
We recognise the irony of a company with Olympiad training in its heritage putting that sentence in large type. It stays because it is true.
A family we spoke to had run the experiment without meaning to, on two brothers. The elder was registered for six competitions a year from Grade 3 (Class 3 in India, Year 4 in England) — maths, science, English, reasoning, and two second rounds in a good season. He collected a drawer of participation certificates and, by twelve, a firm loathing of anything with an OMR sheet; he now negotiates his way out of every exam that isn't compulsory. The younger brother did one competition a year, treated it as a puzzle day out, and got ice cream afterwards regardless of the result. He is fourteen now and still does maths problems for fun. Same school, same parents, same fees available. The variable was never talent. It was dosage.
The "prestige points" conversation
There is one more reason families register, usually unspoken: the feeling that certificates accumulate into something — a CV, an admissions edge, a paper trail of brilliance.
Here is the honest version. A primary-school competition certificate has roughly zero bearing on university admissions anywhere in the world. Admissions offices in every system care about performance at the far end of school; none of them ask what a nine-year-old scored in a multiple-choice Olympiad. The elite tier of competition maths that genuinely does open doors — national olympiad programmes and their selection pipelines — sits years away and several selection layers above the exams this article is about, and children arrive there through deep foundations, not through certificate volume in Grade 4.
So do it for the maths, or don't do it. The CV will neither notice nor care.
The one thing we'd never trade for a certificate
Underneath the framework sits a single priority, and it is worth naming because it settles most borderline cases.
The most valuable mathematical asset your child owns is not a rank, a medal or a qualification to a second round. It is their belief that maths is learnable — that a problem which defeats them today is a problem they can grow into, not a verdict on what kind of brain they have. Every schooling system, every curriculum, every future maths course draws on that belief daily. It is slow to build and quick to damage.
Any competition decision that strengthens that belief — a puzzle-loving child stretched and thrilled, an anxious child discovering a hard paper won't kill them — is worth making. Any decision that spends that belief to purchase a registration is a bad trade at any price. And if the result has already gone the wrong way this season, there is a calm playbook for the week after a disappointing Olympiad result — the short version is that the paper is data, not a verdict.
Whatever you decide, the foundation work is the same
Enter this year or skip it: the child who wins either way is the one whose fundamentals get a little more automatic every day.
